Calcium is well-known as being an essential supplement for strong bones. The same can actually be said for your teeth. Though technically not bones, your teeth benefit in a similar way. Furthermore, your jaw is a bone, and it plays a huge role in your dental health. Your Moreno Valley dentists at Moreno Valley Dentistry would like to tell you more about the importance of keeping your diet enriched with calcium.
Importance of Calcium
Your teeth naturally contain calcium. Without a continued regular supply of the mineral, your teeth can lose density and strength, just like your bones. Calcium-rich foods are one way to ensure an influx of calcium to the parts of your body that need it. In fact, 90% of the calcium in your body is stored within your teeth and bones. So, when you’re not getting enough calcium, your body will start robbing the mineral from your teeth and bones. This makes your risk for gum disease, tooth decay, and jawbone density diminishment much higher. Children are in especially high need of the mineral. Between the ages of four and eight, they should consume 800 milligrams of calcium (the equivalent of three glasses of milk). When they reach the age of nine, this amount doubles.
Jawbone Density
Your jaw is what your teeth are rooted into. If you have a weak jawbone, you are more prone to jaw injuries loose or lost teeth, and facial collapse, where your cheeks sink in. This can make you appear much older and is a very disconcerting condition that often occurs in people that don’t replace missing teeth, or wear dentures for many years. Our jaws do naturally shrink to some degree as we age, but we can definitely stave off the inevitable and/or make the condition much less detrimental and obvious if we keep up with a healthy amount of supplemental calcium.
