Do you remember what happens on a step-by-step basis when you receive a dental filling? Has it been quite a while, so you’re feeling a little bit anxious about scheduling the filling you need to repair your tooth? Perhaps you have just developed your first cavity and are somewhat unsure about what to expect. Whatever the case, you will be happy to learn that this is an incredibly common procedure that is known both for its comfort and efficiency. Regarding the particulars of treatment, allow us to offer some additional information.

Step #1: Creating A Comfortable Experience

It is important that you remember a single fact when it comes to restorative care like dental fillings: We always establish your comfort before we begin the procedure. If you require any special accommodations, please let us know, so we can be sure you feel at ease. Keep in mind that we will numb your tooth and the area around your tooth with a local anesthetic, so you remain numb throughout the treatment.

Step #2: Removing The Decayed Tissue

Once you are completely numb, we will begin by removing the decayed tissue from your tooth. When tooth decay affects a tooth, it eats away at your dental tissue, leaving a hole behind. Within this opening is debris and dying tissue that we will clear away. This ensures the tooth decay will stop progressing. It also sets the foundation for us to restore your tooth.

Step #3: Placing The Filling

Now that your cavity is cleaned and prepped, we will fill the small opening within your tooth. Using a synthetic acrylic-resin material called composite, we will fill the opening and sculpt the material to match your tooth’s natural contours, thereby preserving your bite. Composite is a material we can color-customize, so you will not be able to visually detect the dental filling once placed.
