The gums frame your smile and support your teeth, which means the presence of periodontal disease could weaken your smile and even lead to tooth loss. Which is why when you develop the disease, we want to help with periodontic dentistry. In today’s blog, your Riverside Dental Group team talks about helping smiles with periodontic dentistry.
Gum Disease and Tooth Loss
Periodontal disease occurs when the gums become inflamed, also known as gingivitis. This could be due to factors like plaque and tartar buildup, poor brushing and flossing habits, a diet high in sugar, inflammatory illness, and even a family history of inflammation. Without treatment to reverse gingivitis, you could develop periodontal disease. While this cannot be cured, treatment can be offered to manage it and prevent periodontitis, the late stage linked to the onset of adult tooth loss. With periodontic dentistry, we can help your smile stay healthy and whole.
Periodontal Therapy
If you begin to experience sore, red gums that bleed easily, then let us know. We will examine your smile and may offer relief with a deep cleaning, also known as a scaling and root planing. This form of periodontal therapy allows our team to use an ultrasonic scaling device and a manual tool to gently break up and remove all plaque and tartar from both the teeth and the exposed portions of the roots. We can also destroy pockets of harmful bacteria from beneath the gum line. The procedure could take one visit, or possible multiple ones, depending on the severity of your buildup. We complete the procedure by polishing your smile for a brighter appearance!
Protecting Gums from Home
We may suggest a traditional cleaning every three to four months to help manage the disease, but you can also help from home. Be sure you brush and floss daily, cut back on the sugar in your diet, and avoid the use of tobacco products. These actions not only manage gum disease, but also help fight tooth decay, bad breath, and even teeth stains. If you have any questions about our approach to periodontal therapy, or if you want to schedule a checkup, then contact our team.
