When you have a tooth that cannot be treated with a filling, crown, or root canal, then we may need to extract it to protect your oral health. We could even prevent issues like wisdom tooth eruption! In today’s blog, your Riverside Dental Group team talks about our tooth extraction.
When Smiles Need a Tooth Extraction
When do we need to take a tooth out completely? We may extract a tooth when it is too decayed or infected to be treated with fillings, crowns, or a root canal procedure. Leaving it in place could allow infection to reach other parts of the smile, so taking it out could save your smile. We could also remove teeth to make room for orthodontic treatment, pave the way for a dental prosthetic, or to address teeth loosened by gum disease. For some, this could also improve bite balance and chewing function.
As a person approaches their late teens and early 20s, the wisdom teeth could erupt. This forces up to four new teeth into your smile. Since there is no room for them, this could cause painful impactions, infections, misalignment, and even damaged teeth. But we can remove them before they even erupt, keeping your smile intact!
Planning Your Tooth Removal
To get started, we will take detailed digital x-rays of your smile. These require no bitewings, use 90% less radiation, and are available instantly chairside. With these high-definition images, we can assess the position of the tooth and ensure we can remove it without encountering nerve tissues, blood vessels, or sinus cavities. Our team can also discuss local anesthesia and even sedation to ensure the procedure is a comfortable one. You can enter a deep state of calm and relaxation, with little or no memory of the procedure at all, so even anxious patients enjoy a positive experience.
Extracting the Tooth
When you are properly sedated, we will gently remove the tooth from your smile with a pair of forceps. We then suture the area closed, and you can usually return to your normal routine after a day or two of rest. If you have any questions about our tooth extractions, then contact our team today!
