For teens and adults, we can correct uneven smiles using braces or even clear Invisalign® aligners. But what about uneven smiles in younger children? For kids as young as age seven, your Riverside Dental Group team can help with phase one orthodontics!
When Kids Need Orthodontic Care
Once children reach the age of seven, there is a mix of primary and permanent teeth in their smiles, and we can better gauge the risk of misalignment and developmental issues with the growth of the jaw or the eruption of the teeth. At this point, we can start treatment with phase one orthodontics. With these treatments, we can help guide and expand the growth of the jaw. This could help prevent the need for extensive treatments like jaw surgery and tooth extraction, and limit how long they need to wear braces or aligners in their teen years.
Our Phase One Treatments
The first phase of treatment will help guide the growth of the smile and hold teeth in certain positions until they can start phase two in their teen years. For example, we could use space maintainers to keep areas where baby teeth have been lost prematurely open to allow permanent teeth to erupt properly, limiting poor alignment. We also have permanent and removable retainers, which can be worn to help guide growth and limit misalignment. These will all be custom-fitted for your child’s smile to ensure comfort and treatment with precision.
What Happens in Phase Two?
Once the permanent teeth all erupt and properly calcify, we will start phase two, which involves braces or aligners to complete the correction of their alignment! Our team can use braces for more severe cases, attaching a metal bracket to the front of each tooth and connecting a small portion of a thin arch wire to each bracket. We then adjust tension to shift teeth, offering optimal results in about two years. For minor misalignment, our team could use Invisalign® aligners to shift the teeth, with a clear and removable solution. If you have any questions about how our team will correct poor alignment in little smiles, or to start phase one, talk to our team.
