Do you have dental misalignment? If so, this could lead to issues with your oral health and even your appearance and self-confidence levels. But we can help, even if you have a severe case of misalignment. In today’s blog, your Riverside Dental Group team talks about how we can straighten smiles with traditional braces!
The Causes and Complications of Dental Misalignment
Why do some of us develop uneven teeth? For some, this could be due to factors that happen during early childhood, such as tongue thrusting and thumb sucking. There could be issues with the growth of the jaw or eruption of the teeth that alter alignment too. As we grow, in our teen years wisdom tooth eruption or even tooth loss could alter the alignment in your smile, the same goes for adult patients.
When you have an uneven smile, this could provide places for food and drink particles to become trapped, which increases the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Misalignment also upsets bite balance and could strain the jaw joints, so the risk of TMJ disorder and bruxism (teeth grinding) is higher too. You may also feel embarrassed about your appearance. But we can help correct your misalignment with traditional metal braces.
Help With Traditional Braces
Braces are an excellent way to take on more advanced cases of dental misalignment, so even if you have a severe case, we can help. Our team will attach metal brackets to the front facing sides of each tooth. We then connect a portion of a thin arch wire to each of these brackets with a band. We may also connect the upper and lower sets of braces with bands as well. When you see us for visits, we will adjust tension in the arch wire to help gently shift the teeth. The jawbone and gums will then reform around the positions of the teeth. After about two years, you can see optimal results.
When to Start Treatment
We offer phase one orthodontics for kids as young as age seven, but typically we wait until the teen and adult years for braces. We need all of the permanent teeth to erupt and properly calcify before we move forward.
