corona retainer

Whether you need care to guide your smile before braces, or to address minor misalignment, we could help with a custom orthodontic appliance. A retainer can help kids and adults alike with their uneven smiles. In today’s blog, your Riverside Dental Group team talks about custom retainers.

When You Need an Orthodontic Appliance

When do you need to receive a retainer? For children, this could be part of their Phase One orthodontics, guiding smile growth to prepare smiles for braces or aligners in the teen years, and helping them enjoy better alignment. For teens and adults, these could address minor misalignment, including situations in which teeth have shifted since their braces were removed. We often prescribe these to be worn at night for people who have worn braces to keep their even results intact as the jawbone reforms around the new positions of the teeth.

Our Retainer Options

We have multiple options for our patients. The traditional Hawley option is made from acrylic and stainless-steel wires. There are also clear options available that are less visible when worn. Some of them are removable and need to be soaked and cleaned regularly. While others are permanent and fixed in place. We attach them to the rear teeth. Our team will look at the current state of your smile, your dental history, and your treatment experience to decide whether you need a removable or fixed option. With a simple retainer, we can ensure your smile remains even and beautiful following your treatment!

Braces and Aligners

What about braces and aligners? These orthodontics could be done after wearing retainers to guide smile growth, or the appliance could be used to ensure your results remain the same following treatment. With braces, we attach metal brackets to your teeth and connect them with an arch wire, using them to correct more substantial cases of misalignment. We also have Invisalign® aligners, which use clear and comfortable aligners to shift your teeth. This cosmetic approach is often preferred by our teen and adult patients.
