woodcrest retainers

Whether you have minor misalignment, or have undergone treatment with braces, then you could benefit from retainers. We have custom permanent and removable options to help teens and adults with their uneven smiles! In today’s blog, your Riverside Dental Group team talks about our custom retainers.

The Need for an Orthodontic Appliance

When do we recommend retainers for our patients? If a teen or an adult has recently completed treatment with their braces, we may recommend a set that is worn at night to keep teeth in place, as the jawbone may need more time to reform around the new positions of the teeth, and this will prevent the teeth from reverting back to their previous positions. For children and teens, we could use them to help guide the growth of the smile or keep spaces open in the smile so that final teeth can erupt when a primary one needs to be extracted or is lost prematurely.

Removable and Permanent Retainers

We have several options available. Some are made from wire and acrylic, while others are made from a less visible material, better blending with the smile. The main options are removable and permanent. As the names imply, the removable one can be taken out before meals, and can be soaked and cleaned easily. However, this could be problematic for kids, who tend to lose them. For them, we may recommend a permanent one, as this is fixed in place and never slips or falls out, and is never lost as a result! This also ensures it is worn as recommended, so kids can reach their treatment goals on time. Our team will help decide which option is best for you or your child.

What Happens Next?

For some, braces or treatment with Invisalign® aligners could follow the initial retainer treatment, particularly if the retainer is worn in early childhood. For adults, this could be worn for a while as the jawbone heals and reforms around the new positions of your teeth, and could eventually be phased out or replaced with an aligner.
