Did you know that we can treat misalignment in little smiles? For kids as young as age seven, we can start the process with Interceptive Orthodontics, also known as Phase One Orthodontics. In today’s blog, your Riverside Dental Group team talks about helping kids on their journey to an even smile with custom orthodontics!
The Causes and Oral Health Risks of Misalignment
Often, dental misalignment can form in early childhood, the result of a variety of complications, including thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, or simply issues with the growth of the jaw or eruption of the teeth. Premature tooth loss that alters how permanent teeth erupt, or the failure of these baby teeth to fall out could be an issue. By age seven, there is a mix of primary and permanent teeth, and our team can assess the risk of poor alignment. We can then start treatment at this age if necessary, which helps improve overall alignment and limit the need for lengthy orthodontic treatment in the teen or adult years!
Starting with Phase One Orthodontics
In these early years, our team will help kids with misalignment using Phase One Orthodontics, also known as Interceptive Orthodontics. These are designed to help guide the overall growth of the smile and help improve alignment as they grow. For example, we could create a fixer or removable retainer that is worn to help guide the growth of the bite. Worn each day, this can be essential for lowering the risk of severe misalignment down the road.
If a child loses a baby tooth too soon, this could cause nearby teeth to shift, impacting how permanent teeth arrive and increasing misalignment. But! We can offer a teeth spacer, also known as a space maintainer, to help. This appliance is attached to the surrounding teeth and helps keep the area open and allows the permanent tooth to erupt without issue, keeping smiles even.
What Happens Next?
When your child reaches the teen years and all permanent teeth have erupted and properly calcified, then we could complete treatment with braces or possibly Invisalign® aligners! If you have any questions about Interceptive Orthodontics for kids, then contact our team today.
