When a Tooth Requires Removal
Obviously, when possible, we want to repair and preserve a natural tooth. But sometimes, issues arise that mean protecting your smile as a whole requires the extraction of the tooth. For example, we could extract wisdom teeth before they erupt to prevent pain impactions and other serious complications. We could take out severely decayed or infected teeth before infection spreads to other teeth or into the jawbone itself. The Extraction Process
How do we extract a tooth? Often, the procedure could take as little as a half hour. We will use a pair of forceps to gently loosen and remove the tooth. If you have wisdom teeth, we may need to open the gums above them to access and remove these third molars. Once we remove a tooth, we will suture the area closed and you will return home. For the first day or two, you need to avoid straws, be gentle when you brush and floss, and eat soft foods. We want a clot to form and not dislodge so the area heals quickly. We will remove the sutures in a follow-up visit.
