moreno valley tooth extractionIf you have trouble with your smile, we can often help with restorative treatments, such as a filling or crown. But if you have severe concern, we could assist with oral surgery, including tooth extraction. In today’s blog, your Riverside Dental Group team talks about when a tooth extraction is necessary for your smile.

When a Tooth Requires Removal

Obviously, when possible, we want to repair and preserve a natural tooth. But sometimes, issues arise that mean protecting your smile as a whole requires the extraction of the tooth. For example, we could extract wisdom teeth before they erupt to prevent pain impactions and other serious complications. We could take out severely decayed or infected teeth before infection spreads to other teeth or into the jawbone itself. Our team could take a tooth out to make room for orthodontic treatment, or to improve overall bite balance and chewing function.

The Extraction Process

How do we extract a tooth? Often, the procedure could take as little as a half hour. We will use a pair of forceps to gently loosen and remove the tooth. If you have wisdom teeth, we may need to open the gums above them to access and remove these third molars. Once we remove a tooth, we will suture the area closed and you will return home. For the first day or two, you need to avoid straws, be gentle when you brush and floss, and eat soft foods. We want a clot to form and not dislodge so the area heals quickly. We will remove the sutures in a follow-up visit.

Steps to Ensure Comfort

Our team wants to ensure your oral surgery is always a comfortable experience, even if you have dental anxiety. In addition to numbing the area directly with a local anesthetic, our team can also administer sedation to help you enter a deep state of calm and relaxation, with little to no memory of the procedure at all. We could off nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, or even IV, so you have no memory of the process and remain comfortable throughout.

If you have any questions about how we gently and safely extract a tooth, or if you have wisdom teeth you need to have removed before they erupt, then reach out to our team today.
