at Dental Associates of Corona, will share the details of a new study that proposes using protein filled capsules to alleviate periodontitis.
Gum Tissue Regrowth?
The research report was presented at the 244th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society. Steven Little, Ph.D, reported on the research in which they performed laboratory experiments on mice to come up with the early hypothesis that regrowth of tissues damaged by gum disease was possible.
How Protein Capsules Can Fight Gum Disease
Gingivitis is the clinical name for mildly puffy gums that bleed easily, also known as early gum disease. The bacterial infection will advance if it’s not treated. As inflammation worsens gum tissues start to recede, exposing more of your dentin and weakening the attachment of teeth. Periodontal pockets form between the gums and teeth, providing a prime breeding ground for germs. This is where controlled-release protein capsules can potentially come into play. Developed by Dr. Little and his team, these capsules can be injected into periodontal pockets. Over time, the capsules would dissolve, releasing the protein that would guide immune cells to the areas of unhealthy gum tissue. Not only could the disease process be halted by the surge of white blood cells, but the protein could possibly induce regrowth of gum tissue, according to Dr. Little.
