Cracked Teeth: The Symptoms

It may seem odd to dedicate part of this blog to the symptoms of cracked teeth. Obviously, the main symptom is the big crack in your tooth, right? Cracks in teeth can actually be anywhere from deep and painful to subtle and indiscernible. You may feel the initial jolt, but your tooth seems intact and you move on until later in the day you notice a rough spot. Cracks on further back teeth may be hard to see with the visual eye, anyway. However, if you notice sensitivity or intermittent pain, this could be the sign of a fracture in the dentin of your tooth. Extremely shallow cracks may even be difficult to see on an x-ray.

Cracked Teeth: The Treatment

If your tooth fracture exposes the inner tissues of your teeth (pulp, blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissues) serious infection is possible which can lead to tooth loss. Depth and severity of the crack will be the deciding factor of what or how much action needs to be taken from a dentistry standpoint. One common form of teeth fractures are very small and shallow. Known as craze lines, these vertical fractures can sometimes be resolved with teeth whitening. If your cracked tooth involves a molar, however, a filling or crown may be recommended.
