When you ask if you should eat with your Invisalign treatment trays in place, our answer is always going to be, “No.” However, when you’re not sure why this is so important, you may find yourself occasionally drinking something other than water, scarfing down a quick snack, or even indulging in a full meal with your trays in. Before you end up shrugging off our suggestions and feeling quite disappointed with the consequences that will surely follow, we suggest you take additional advice. Think through a few solid reasons to take your trays out before you eat (every time), so you can save yourself unnecessary frustration.
Reason #1: You Might Tear Your Trays
Have you ever noticed the fact that your teeth and jaws are surprisingly strong? You will have noticed if you’ve ever tried to eat something very tough, hard, or sticky. Have you ever noticed that some foods seem safe but end up scratching your gums or palate? Unfortunately, if you wear your Invisalign treatment trays, a couple things may happen: You might harm them as a result of the strength and nature of your teeth and jaws. Or, you may eat foods that damage the trays. All in all, the potential for damage is not worth it.
Reason #2: You May Stain Your Trays
Your Invisalign treatment trays are clear! This is one of the biggest perks of the treatment: You can’t see it. Unfortunately, if you eat while you wear your trays, they will become stained. Your incognito treatment will then become very obvious (and very unsightly).
Reason #3: You’re Putting Your Smile At Risk
In addition to putting your treatment trays at risk when you eat with Invisalign treatment in place, you also put your oral health at risk. Some amount of food will become trapped within your trays, so take them out before you eat!
