at Riverside Dental Group will tell you more about gum disease at its various stages.
Gingivitis
Gingivitis is the most common form of gum disease. Luckily, many people seek periodontal treatment early on so that the infection is not allowed to progress. Gingivitis is sometimes symptomless, but may be marked by puffy, swollen, irritated, and/or bleeding gums. Plaque and tartar buildup on your teeth can collect at the gumline. If you fail to meet your recommended six month dental cleanings, you could end up with gingivitis as a result.
Full-Blown Gum Disease
This stage of gum disease is marked by further infection as well as possible deterioration of the bone tissue that supports your teeth. Gums can begin to recede. Tissue will pull away from the bone, beginning the process of periodontal pocket development. These pouches are traps for food debris and bacteria.
Periodontitis
When gum disease reaches this severe state, tissues, ligaments, and bones that support your teeth are in danger. Teeth will begin to loosen and possibly fall out or require extraction. Tooth abscesses are extremely painful and may result in a course of antibiotics or tooth loss. Fortunately, you can prevent gum disease with good oral hygiene and regular visits to your Riverside dentists.
