corona wisdom teeth

For teens and those approaching their 20s, up to four new teeth could erupt in the rear of the mouth. Known as wisdom teeth, or the third molars, these could cause painful impactions and other serious complications. To keep your smile intact, your Riverside Dental Group team could remove wisdom teeth before they erupt!

The Eruption of Your Third Molars

As we approach our early 20s, four new molars could erupt in the rear of your mouth. There is little to no room for them and their arrival could cause serious problems for your smile. They could only partially erupt due to lack of room, causing a painful impaction. They could damage nearby teeth and increase the risk of tooth decay and infection. Forcing so many new teeth into your bite could cause dental misalignment, which not only changes the appearance of your smile, but also increases the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. The changes to your bite balance could also mean a greater risk of complications like TMJ disorder and bruxism (teeth grinding). We can help you avoid these potential risks with a tooth extraction!

Planning Your Tooth Extraction

To begin, we will take detailed digital x-rays of your smile. These use 90% less radiation and provide high-definition images instantly chairside, so you don’t have to spend time in the chair waiting. With these images, we can pinpoint the position of the wisdom teeth and assess the risk they pose for your smile. Our team can then plan the extraction so we avoid contact with nerve tissues, blood vessels, and sinus cavities. To ensure the process is comfortable for you, we will administer a local anesthetic to the area where we are removing your teeth. We also have dental sedation to help even anxious patients enter a deep state of calm and relaxation, with little to no memory of the procedure.

What Happens Next

When you are properly prepped and sedated, our team will gently open the gums above the wisdom teeth so we can access and remove them with a pair of forceps. We then suture the area closed, and after a day or two of rest you can return to your normal routine.
