Oral surgery is an option in dentistry that can repair dental-related problems or also be used as preventive care. While it may seem scary to go in for a root canal or tooth extraction, we are here to provide you with comfortable care throughout the whole process so you can worry less. In today’s blog, Riverside Dental Group of California is here to tell you all about the types of oral surgery we provide and what to expect!
What Are My Options For Oral Surgery?
Our office offers wisdom tooth removal, general tooth extraction, and root canal therapy. These can all be used to prevent further damage to your teeth and improve your smile. You and your dental provider will talk about treatment plan options if they feel this is the best solution for you. All these procedures have sedative options available to you.
Tooth Extraction – While you are under sedation, the dentist will go in and remove a tooth from your mouth. Your dentist may decide this is the best option if you have a problem that is beyond care, the tooth is bothering other areas of your mouth, or for cosmetic reasons. We can also offer you dental implants or prosthetics that will replace the tooth with an artificial one that can be sturdier and match the rest of your teeth.
Wisdom Tooth Removal – These are also known as the “third molar” and removing them is a very common procedure. There are four wisdom teeth that can grow during your teen to adult years, and sometimes the way they grow can cause discomfort or disrupt your alignment. In many situations, the dentist will suggest that you get your wisdom teeth removed before getting braces or before they begin harming your other teeth.
Root Canal Therapy – This is a restorative option. IF you have decay in an area that has reached the pulp, we may need to perform a root canal. The dentist will remove the decayed part of the tooth and replace it with a structure that is stronger. This prevents the decay from growing any further and hurting the rest of your tooth.
Caring For Yourself After Surgery
Each surgery will have its own specific aftercare instructions, however, there are some general rules to follow. You may have to limit your daily activities as you heal from your oral surgery. Be sure to take pain medications as instructed and call your dentist If you experience any severe discomfort during the healing process. We will schedule a follow-up appointment to check on you after the healing process.
