Orofacial pain is defined as any pain in, or around, the face. Along with general aches, patients with orofacial pain have reported dizziness, earaches, clicking or popping of the joints, teeth grinding, and sore jaw muscles. These unpleasant symptoms can make it hard to get through the day, and even harder to sleep peacefully at night. Poor sleep, coupled with chronic pain, can result in a diminished quality of life. The Riverside dentists at Riverside Dental Group discusses how orofacial pain relates to your dental health.
Combatting Orofacial Pain
Orofacial pain can stem from causes that have no relation to dentistry, such as cancer, or impact injuries. According to Dr. Peter G. Bastian, spokesperson for the Academy of General Dentistry, “your dentist will try to diagnose the pain source by conducting tests to rule out a cracked tooth, the need for root canal, gum disease, clenching, or teeth grinding. These factors can cause discomfort in the facial region, but can be easily addressed.” TMD (temporomandibular joint disorder) is another common cause for reported orofacial pain which can potentially be resolved by your dentist.
Relieving Orofacial Pain
Uncovering the cause of orofacial pain is important, so that correct treatment can be prescribed by your doctor or dentist. In general, over-the-counter pain relievers and warm compresses can provide temporary relief, but long term solutions for orofacial pain that has lasted for more than 10 days, and does not have an obvious cause, will require further medical attention. If it is determined that the source of your discomfort is not serious, rest, relaxation, alternating hot and cold compresses, warm tea bags applied to the area, massage, and sometimes physical therapy all have worked for certain people. Your pain may respond to a combination of treatments, so give different options a try. Also, stick to soft foods during your flare up as many of your oral and facial muscles are engaged when you chew.
